Remove the background from a photo of a person, free and private

Add a portrait and the background is cut away in your browser; the photo is never uploaded. Save it as a transparent PNG or on a solid colour, with edge controls and a before/after slider.

How to use Background Remover
  1. Choose, drop, or paste a photo of a person. The first time, your browser downloads the background model (about 26 MB) from this site; you can cancel it.
  2. The background is removed on your device in a few seconds. Drag the slider over the picture to compare it with the original.
  3. Pick transparent, white, black, or any colour, and adjust the edge if a halo is left or hair is cut off.
  4. Save the result: a PNG when transparent, a JPEG on a solid colour.
Questions
Does it work on objects, products or pets?
Not reliably. The model is trained to find people. On a product shot it often keeps pieces of the background, such as furniture, or cuts away parts of the object, and it can't tell when a photo has no person in it. We tested the small background models that can run on a phone, and none was good enough on products yet.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is processed entirely in your browser. The only download is the background model and its runtime, about 26 MB, fetched from this site the first time and then kept in your browser's cache. The tool remembers only your background colour choice, on this device.
How long does it take?
On a recent computer about a second per photo after the one-time download. Phones are slower, typically a few seconds. Very large photos are processed at a reduced size for the detection step, and the cut-out is then applied to the full-resolution photo.
The edge has a halo or the hair is cut off. What can I do?
Use Edge position: move it toward tighter to trim a leftover rim of background, or toward looser to keep more of the hair. Edge hardness turns a soft edge into a crisp cut. Busy backgrounds and hair against a similar colour are the hardest cases; a plain wall behind the person gives the cleanest result.
What file do I get?
A PNG with a transparent background, or a JPEG when you choose a solid colour. Both keep the original photo's full size. The file name gets "-no-background" added.
Which model does it use?
MODNet, an open portrait-matting model released under the Apache 2.0 licence, run with ONNX Runtime Web. Both are served from quickeasytools.com, not a third-party server.
