- When time is up, read your net and gross WPM, accuracy and the characters you missed most.
- Try again to beat your personal best, or make a result card to share your score.
Questions
- How is WPM calculated?
- A word is counted as 5 characters, spaces and punctuation included, the standard used by typing tests, so long words don't lower your score. Gross WPM is every character you typed (including ones you later deleted) divided by 5, divided by the minutes of the test. Net WPM is gross WPM minus one word per minute for each error still left in the text when time runs out, and it never goes below zero.
- How is accuracy calculated?
- Accuracy is correct characters divided by typed characters, checked at the moment you type each one. Fixing a mistake with Backspace removes it from your net WPM, but it still counts against accuracy, because the key was mistyped.
- Is the timer accurate?
- Yes. The test starts on your first keystroke and is timed with your browser's high-resolution clock. Keys typed after the time is up are not counted, and every test is scored over exactly the duration you picked, even if your computer is busy or you switch tabs.
- Where does the text come from?
- Everything was written or compiled for this tool: a list of 200 common English words, a set of short original sentences, and a numbers-and-punctuation mode generated from the same words with numbers, prices, times, capitals and symbols mixed in. The text keeps going, so you never run out before the timer does.
- Where are my personal bests saved?
- Your best net WPM for each combination of text and duration is saved in this browser on this device, along with its accuracy and date. Nothing is sent anywhere. Use Reset personal bests to clear them, or clear this site's data in your browser.
- Can I share my result?
- Yes, if you want to. Make a result card draws an image of your score in your browser. Save it, or use Share to send the image and a link to this test through your device's share menu. Nothing is uploaded to us.
- Can I use it with a keyboard only or a screen reader?
- Yes. Everything works from the keyboard: Tab to the options, type to start, Esc to restart. Screen readers hear the next few words as you reach them, and the result is announced when the test ends.
