Questions
- How do I type a conversion?
- Write the number and its unit, for example 5 ft, 72°F, 3.5 GB or 120 km/h. To choose the target unit in the same line, add "in" or "to": 10 kg in lb, 5 cm to in. Symbols, names and plurals all work (lb, lbs, pound, pounds).
- What is the difference between MB and MiB?
- MB, GB and TB are decimal: 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. MiB, GiB and TiB are binary: 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes (1024 × 1024). Drive makers and macOS use decimal units; Windows shows binary sizes but labels them MB and GB, which is why a "500 GB" drive appears as about 465 GB. The converter lists both and marks each as decimal or binary.
- Why does a temperature difference convert differently?
- A temperature reading depends on where each scale starts: 10 °C is 50 °F. A change in temperature only depends on the size of a degree: a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F. Choose "A difference" under Temperature when you are converting a change.
- How accurate are the results?
- The factors are the official definitions, such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg and 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 litres. Results are rounded to the number of significant digits you choose (6 by default, up to 15). Month and year use average Gregorian lengths.
- Which gallons, cups and tons are these?
- Gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce, tablespoon and teaspoon are US customary measures; imperial (UK) gallon, pint and fluid ounce are listed separately. Ton is the US short ton (2000 lb); tonne is the metric ton (1000 kg) and long ton is the UK ton (2240 lb).
- What does the share link contain?
