Questions
- How does joining PDF line wraps decide where a paragraph ends?
- Lines are joined with a single space until a paragraph ends. A paragraph ends at a blank line, before a line that starts like a list item (•, -, *, “1.”, “1)” or “a)”), or after a line that ends in . ! ? : or … and is shorter than 80% of the longest line in the same stretch of text between blank lines, since wrapped lines fill the page width and a paragraph's last line usually does not. Check the Changes view: a short line inside a paragraph that ends a sentence can be kept as its own line.
- What happens to words hyphenated at the end of a line?
- When a line ends in a letter followed by a hyphen, it is joined to the next line without a space and the hyphen is kept, so “well-” and “known” become “well-known”, but a word split by hyphenation like “exam-” and “ple” becomes “exam-ple”. The tool never deletes the hyphen for you; the Changes view marks each of these joins.
- Will it change my punctuation or words?
- No. It only removes spaces, tabs, blank lines and line breaks (and whole duplicate lines if you turn that on). Letters, numbers and punctuation are never changed. Every removal and join is shown in the Changes view.
- What counts as a repeated space?
- Two or more spaces or tabs in a row between other characters, including non-breaking spaces, become one normal space. A single tab is left alone, and indentation at the start of a line is only removed by Trim line edges.
- Can I get my original text back?
- Your input is never changed by the options; the cleaned text is shown separately. If you press Use as input or Clear, Undo brings the previous text back.
