Questions
Which copy of a duplicate is kept?
The first one. Every later line that matches an earlier one is removed, and the remaining lines stay in their original order unless you turn on Sort A–Z. The Changes view shows each removed line where it was.
Does it treat “Apple” and “apple” as duplicates?
Only with Ignore case turned on. By default, lines must have the same letter case to count as duplicates.
What does Ignore extra spaces do?
With it on, which is the default, lines that differ only in spaces or tabs at their start or end, or in repeated spaces between words, count as the same line. The first copy is kept exactly as it was written. Turn it off to match lines character for character.
What happens to blank lines?
Blank lines are never counted as duplicates, so they stay where they are. To remove them, open More cleanup and turn on Remove blank lines. With Sort A–Z on, blank lines are moved to the end.
How does Sort A–Z order the lines?
Alphabetically using your browser's language rules, with numbers inside lines compared by value, so “item 2” comes before “item 10”. Sorting is off by default.
