Questions
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. The HEIC file is decoded in your browser; Safari decodes it itself and other browsers download a decoder the first time you add a HEIC photo. The photo never leaves your device.
- Will portrait photos come out sideways?
- No. The rotation the iPhone stores in the HEIC file is applied, so the JPG or PNG is upright.
- Should I choose JPG or PNG?
- JPG works everywhere and keeps files small; the quality slider trades size for detail. PNG is lossless but usually several times larger for photos.
- What happens with Live Photos, bursts, or files with several images?
- The main image, the one the Photos app shows, is converted. Motion from Live Photos is not included.
- Why does it say my HEIC file can't be converted?
- Some HEIF files use a variant the decoder doesn't support, such as AV1-coded images, and damaged or partly copied files can't be read. The message next to the file says which case it is.
