Why a 1 TB Drive Shows as 931 GB

Use this when a new drive shows less space than the box promised and you want to know whether any is missing.

Steps
  1. Type the size from the box, for example 1 TB in GiB.
  2. Read the result: about 931 GiB.
  3. Compare it with the size Windows shows, which it labels GB.
Good to know
  • Drive makers count 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows counts in steps of 1024 but still writes GB, so the same drive looks smaller.
  • Space taken by the system and preinstalled files comes on top of this difference.
